Runge patents new method for mine planning
Brisbane, 2 October, 2009
Unique method and system for integrated mine planning that is adaptive to the dynamic nature of the mining business patented in Australia and South Africa
Leading mining technology services company Runge Limited (Runge), today announced it has received two patent rights (No 2006279250 and No 200800449) related to the methodology of the overall framework called ‘method and system of integrated mine planning’ of its enterprise solution, Mining Dynamics. The process has been pioneered by Runge for over four years and has proven to improve predictability of mining operations which have a high degree of dynamic variability. The methodology couples business process execution with comprehensive access to information. Any information from geology through to mine engineering / planning / scheduling, operations and reconciliation can be easily visualised, interrogated and reported to the executive, operations and systems management teams.
Glen Kuntz, VP Enterprise Mining Solution of Runge says: “The overall methodology and system patent can be summed up as the three C’s of simplicity - communication, coordination and collaboration across the mining operation and executive levels to ‘deliver the right information to the right people at the right time’. This methodology provides the ability to quickly collaborate in order to harmonise new ideas, win support and deliver ground breaking initiatives. These in turn generate short and long-term growth while significantly driving a competitive advantage.”
Planning in the mining industry is non-linear and dynamic and the use of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems in business is wide-spread. Whilst predictable supply inputs have been successful in the use of ERP systems, mining operations are different and have inherently unique characteristics. The planning components of ERP systems, designed for other industries and deployed within a mining operation, are not suitable without the direct coupling and integration of spatial mining information with transactional financial information.
In order to achieve this level of integration Runge has formed business and technology partnerships with ERP companies, such as SAP, to help mining companies maximise their value and profitability through a focused approach to their mining operations. This allows mining operations to quickly disseminate and distribute timely information throughout their organisation using a standard planning methodology and solution across the business intelligence layer.
Glen Kuntz continues: “Successful mining operations depend on the availability and reliability of information in order to make critical every day decisions. Because of the complexity of mining data and the spatial characteristics associated with it, rapid universal access to trusted and accurate information has traditionally been difficult. Basing decisions on data that is misplaced, not universally accessible, out-dated, or incomplete can at best become a bottleneck in the decision making process and at worst be operationally and financially devastating. Mining Dynamics reliably coordinates and manages both the common and unique data types associated with any mining operation and enables the integration, visualisation, and comprehensive management of the wide variety of mining data, regardless of its origin or software platform”.
About Mining Dynamics: Runge has used five main categories to shift its innovative customer offering and help its customers enhance their decision making capability. Some of the key capabilities that customers have asked for and Runge has delivered are:
• Information - Right Data to the Right People at the Right Time;
• Integration – Providing a Framework and transparency to Enable data driven decision making by providing visibility of data from enterprise to operation;
• Completeness - Integrating spatial and non-spatial data for a full picture of the business;
• Repeatability - Capturing, standardising and systematising corporate business process knowledge; and
• Control - Bringing reliable, repeatable and transparent control of business process and information, reducing time wasted in locating information and improving information quality and reliability.
With over 30 years expertise across a range of mining disciplines, Runge’s approach to the business of mining is strongly grounded in economic principles and delivering mine planning solutions that are tightly coupled with technological support and training.

Runge announces FY09 full year results
Brisbane, 31 August, 2009
Leading mining technology services company, Runge Limited (Runge), today announced its full year results for the financial year ended 30 June 2009, delivering a net profit after tax of $7.9 million.
Overview
Runge’s FY09 full year results included:
• Total revenue up 18.6% to $83.4 million
• EBITA up 13.4% to $12.7 million
• Net profit after tax up 33.9% to $7.9 million
• Earnings per share of 6.4 cents
• Return on equity of 18.0%
• No gearing: net cash of $3.2 million
• Final FY09 dividend of 2.5 cents per share fully franked: total FY09 dividend of 4.5 cents per share fully franked
Tony Kinnane, Managing Director of Runge, said that “the earnings were equivalent to last year’s earnings when taking into account proforma adjustments. This was a satisfactory result in light of the difficult circumstances caused by the Global Financial Crisis over the last 12 months”.
Revenue was up as a result of organic growth across all regions. Margins however were down over the full year because of lower than expected software revenue in 1H09 due to delays in purchasing approvals.
Runge’s FY09 full year results demonstrate the resilience of the company’s business model and strategic global footprint. The company continued to grow its global business with the establishment of an office in Hong Kong in February 2009, thereby increasing its exposure into new and growing markets. Runge’s other offshore businesses performed well, particularly the USA and Asian offices.
In this difficult market the company was able to respond quickly to variations in customer demand for services and technology, and capitalise on opportunities identified by our global network of offices.
Runge has retained staff during these very difficult economic conditions and as a result is well placed to benefit from the early signs of recovery we are now seeing.
Runge’s strong cash flows have allowed the company to reinvest in the business and declare a fully franked final dividend of 2.5 cents per share, making a total fully franked dividend for FY09 of 4.5 cents per share.
Outlook
In commenting on Runge’s outlook for the 2010 financial year and beyond, Mr Kinnane said “the market fundamentals are improving with less uncertainty within the mining industry.
Looking forward, Runge has a number of global growth opportunities. This is particularly evident in the demand for Runge’s software solutions which has built a large sales pipeline. The demand for Runge’s consulting services is recovering in Asia, South Africa and South America and holding steady elsewhere”.

Runge releases a new version of Xact short-term scheduling solution
New tools to provide greater flexibility and improved accuracy in mine planning
Brisbane, 18 June, 2009
Runge Ltd, a global mining consulting and technology services company, today announced the release of the latest version of its short-term scheduling solution, Xact 1.4, in Australia. Targeted at coal, metals and underground mining operations in particular, the solution provides tools to create more detailed and accurate mining plans in less time.
John Hives, Mining Specialist at Runge, said "Mining operations grapple daily with a variety of challenges to meet their production targets. While long-term and medium-term schedules provide the guidance needed for mining operators, there is often a lack of detail about short-term schedules. Every shift brings new short-term challenges such as equipment failure, labor changes, weather, and many other variables, and the impact of these changes needs to be carefully considered so that medium and long term goals are not compromised.
"Xact 1.4 has an improved tool set including graphical scheduling capability, multiple stockpiling options and charting ability. These allow mining engineers to react quickly and decisively against changes, which is key to the success of today's mine operations. We've also made it simple and easy to use and the system's intuitiveness allows minimal set-up and training time."
Xact is designed to address the dynamic nature of short-term scheduling, allowing operational staff to monitor and report on work progress of mining operations. The solution is designed to be used for all types of mines and mineral deposits, providing users a short-term scheduling tool kit that provides a central repository for short-term scheduling data and logic. This allows mining engineers to construct, analyse and update short-term mining schedules on a regular basis using databases, Gantt charts, plots and reports. The powerful presentation and reporting tools mean that inventory and quality reports are easily created, updated, and run using any time scale.
Ian Neilsen, Senior Mining Engineer of Ensham Resources, said, "Today more than ever enhanced cost management is crucial to the profitability of mining operations. We have been using Runge's Xact solution for 2 years to improve our inventory control. Asset utilisation management issues, such as analysis of equipment availability, are imperative to mining operations as they minimise disruption to the business. The ability to have daily quality reports with the new system provides enhanced visibility to identify and resolve quality variances. This brings flexibility because changes to blocks and task re-sequencing update the schedule happens automatically and re-evaluation of any part of the schedule automatically flows through the schedule. The model allows for a quick and accurate evaluation of alternate detailed mine plans in reaction to major strategy and advance changes of the mine directly translate into cost savings."
Review Xact 1.4 demo in http://www.xact.net.au/
Xact also provides input into other Runge products including XPAC (medium to long-term planning software), XERAS (a financial modeling and re-forecasting application) and Mining Dynamics (an Enterprise management solution for the mining industry).
Model partnership delivers an Australian first
Brisbane 13 May, 2009
In an Australian first, GeoScience Victoria and mining software and services company, Runge, have implemented a new and innovative system that allows GSV to seamlessly build, manage and distribute high-quality 3D models.
Three-dimensional geological models are becoming the primary tool for resource explorers looking for new mineral deposits, geothermal energy or groundwater resources.
GeoScience Victoria Director, Kathy Hill, said GSV needed to develop a consistent and
systematic environment in which 3D models in a range of formats could be prepared,
manipulated, stored, discovered, visualized and delivered.
“The ability to quickly and easily access 3D models is critical,” Ms Hill said. “These models need to be available to internal and external clients while at the same time protecting sensitive industry data.”
Ms Hill said GeoScience Victoria managed a huge amount of geological data collected by government and industry. Existing systems for managing this information were not suitable for 3D data.
“Through a competitive tender process, mining software and services company, Runge, provided us with tools to manage 3D model data using their Mining Dynamics software,” Ms Hill said.
The vision was to create a system that was the ‘first point of call’ for anyone building or
requesting a model within GeoScience Victoria for use in and outside the organisation.
“Information management is integral to all GSV projects. The solution proposed by Runge and later implemented helped GeoScience Victoria move from 2D to a 3D view of geosciences information,” Ms Hill said.
“Together we have implemented a 3D model management tool that brings together content-rich, standardised metadata, business processes and native model format transformation.”
Models from industry are received by GeoScience Victoria in a variety of formats, which need to be viewed, checked and stored. Mining Dynamics receives and stores 3D models with the appropriate security, so that confidential models, for example exploration data, can only be accessed by the right people.
“Runge developed a customised solution for GeoScience Victoria using Mining Dynamics’ core functionality, which is delivered through a web browser,” Ms Hill said.
Geoscience Victoria’s 3D model management system has attracted interest from companies and government agencies from around Australia and overseas.
Runge Mining Dynamics Manager Glen Kuntz said Runge worked closely with GeoScience Victoria to deliver a solution which could now be modified as GeoScience Victoria’s processes mature and change.
“We are pleased to support GeoScience Victoria’s long-term strategy to represent the state’s geology in 3D and to provide users, such as exploration companies, timely and visual access to geoscience information,” Mr Kuntz said.

Tony Kinnane, CEO of Runge, said, "Management and employees of Minarco and MineConsult will join Runge, lifting the total number of our employees globally to 210. By growing our geographical presence Runge can offer better and broader career opportunities for staff.
"These acquisitions also reinforce Runge's strategy to globalise the business. This follows the success of our recent growth with MRM Mining Services Pty Ltd in South Africa and Pincock, Allen & Holt in North America. The successful integration of the two companies has directly contributed to Runge's half-year FY2007 results where profit before tax for the six months ended 31 December 2006, was A$3.7 million, 34 per cent ahead of budget. Revenue was A$17 million, 11 per cent ahead of budget."
